2005 Chevrolet Express 2500 Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2005 Chevrolet Express 2500?
A: You should start replacement of the Oil Pan by disconnecting the battery negative cable and raising your vehicle into the air. Both engine oil drainage begins with removing the Oil Pan Drain Plug followed by removing the Oil Filter and adapter. First remove the bolt locking the Starter wire bracket and transmission cooler pipes. Then disassemble the crankcase position sensor wiring harness from its retainer before removing the Starter and transmission cover. Take out both the access plugs that protect transmission to Oil Pan bolts and Oil Pan rear nuts. The low oil level sensor becomes non-replaceable so replace it if present. Take out the engine oil level sensor before removing Oil Pan bolts and nuts to remove the Oil Pan and its accompanying gasket. Discard both pieces post-installation. Thoroughly clean down all contact areas between engine and Oil Pan surfaces. The engine front cover to engine block junction and crankshaft rear oil seal housing to engine block junction of the Oil Pan sealing surfaces must receive a 5 mm (0.197 inch) wide and 25 mm (1.0 inch) long application of gm p/n 12346141 or canadian p/n 10953433 adhesive. It's essential to install the new Oil Pan Gasket after applying adhesive when it remains wet. Put the new Oil Pan Gasket inside the Oil Pan groove before attaching the Oil Pan to the engine block while you push the gasket through the grooves. Set the Oil Pan adjacent to a straight edge before installing all Oil Pan bolts but refrain from tightening them. Stretch a feeler gauge between the Oil Pan and transmission housing to perform this measurement. During installation check the measurements at three points on the pan-to-transmission housing using a feeler gauge - any reading above 0.3 mm (0.011 inch) requires readjustment. Apply 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque to the Oil Pan bolts while following an installation sequence before verifying proper alignment with the feeler gauge measurement. Place an updated Oil Pan Drain Plug o-ring (seal) onto the Drain Plug followed by tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque. Screw in the new engine oil level sensor with a torque of 13 nm (115 inch lbs.). You should torque the transmission's Oil Pan bolt set to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) before moving on to the transmission cover bolts at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Seal the Oil Pan rear nut access plug and Starter motor with the Starter wiring harness bracket bolt and transmission cooler pipes, then snug the bracket bolt to 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). To complete the service you must install the following in this order: the ckp sensor wiring harness, the Oil Filter adapter, then the Oil Filter, along with the Drain Plug for the Oil Pan. Next lower the vehicle while filling the crankcase with engine oil then reconnect the battery negative cable.
