2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: To replace the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil, one has to disable the sir system. Make sure the wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead and the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is not installed or the ignition switch is in lock position to prevent the air bag clock spring assembly from becoming uncentered. Remove the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft and take out the tilt lever straight out where necessary and remove the lower trim cover by being in use of 2 torx (R) head screws and then the upper trim cover by using 2 torx (R) head screws. Allow the wire harness straps to be detached from the Steering Wheel column wire harness, then detach the retaining ring, then remove the air bag clock spring. Replace the air bag clock spring if needed and throw away the old one. For installation ensure again the straightness of the wheels and the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is in place or ignition switch is in lock. Make sure the new air bag clock spring assembly is in the center and align it with the horn tower of the turn signal cancel cam i.e. Installation. Slide on the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Place the retaining ring firmly into the groove of the Steering Shaft assembly and pull away the centering tab of the new air bag clock spring. All you have to do is install the upper trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws and tighten them with a value of 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). However, install the lower trim cover secured with another set of 2 torx(R) head screws that should also be tightened to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Make sure that the tabs of the lower trim cover click into the upper trim cover one to the other. For vehicles with a tilt column, align the tilt lever handle to the steering column and slide it, while it locks. Last, attach the Steering Wheel to the Steering Shaft and turn on the sir system.
