2005 Chevrolet Uplander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2005 Chevrolet Uplander?
A: The replacement process begins by taking out the engine front cover. Move the Crankshaft to line up the timing marks before continuing. The alignment pin from the camshaft also needs to be positioned correctly adjacent to both the Crankshaft sprocket and Timing Chain dampener. Start by taking off the camshaft sprocket bolt before you move onto the camshaft sprocket along with the Timing Chain then the Crankshaft sprocket. Start by removing the Timing Chain dampener's bolts before pulling it out with the Timing Chain dampener. Discard the camshaft thrust plate bolts and thrust plate if removal becomes necessary. Check the Timing Chain for any signs of damage before conducting a formal inspection of both Timing Chain components. Reinstall the camshaft thrust plate after installation then tighten its bolts to 10 nm torque (89 inch lbs). Set the Crankshaft sprocket into place then cover its thrust surface with engine oil supplement gm p/n 1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) or a comparable product. Screw the Timing Chain dampener into position before tightening its bolts at 21 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Mount the Timing Chain to the camshaft gear before you lower the camshaft sprocket which holds the chain. Then guide the chain onto the Crankshaft Gear. Carefully align the Crankshaft timing mark to the bottom timing mark on the Timing Chain dampener along with positioning the camshaft gear timing mark to match the center line of the locator hole with the top timing mark on the chain dampener. Insure that the dowel of the camshaft matches its corresponding hole in the camshaft sprocket. Twist the mounting bolt to draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft. Properly tighten it to 140 nm (103 ft. Lbs.). Before reinstalling the engine front cover apply engine oil to the Crankshaft along with its sprocket.
