2005 GMC Canyon Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2005 GMC Canyon?
A: In order to change the Camshaft, one needs to start by removing the Camshaft cover, then the exhaust Camshaft position (CMP) sensor and the intake Camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Rotate the Crankshaft clockwise until the #1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke, ensuring the word delphi on the exhaust Camshaft position actuator is parallel with the Cylinder Head to cam cover mating surface. Use Camshaft holding tool (J 44221) at the back of the Camshaft and then remove the intake as well as the exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolts disposing of them. Then, put the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) on the Cylinder Head, adjusting the horizontal bolts to the Camshaft sprockets and ensure chain tension. Carefully slide the sprockets with the Timing Chain feom the camshafts as well as the j 44222. Otherwise, loosen the Camshaft cap bolts alternately so that all valve spring pressure is relieved and letting the Camshaft caps rest in a rack correctly for re-assembling. Remove the Camshaft caps and j 44221 and get the camshafts out of the Cylinder Head and clean and inspect them. For installation, coat the Camshaft journals, thrust face, and lobes with clean engine oil, then install the j 44221 with the Camshaft flats up and the #1 piston at tdc. Reinstall the intake and exhaust camshafts into their original positions so that the markings on the Camshaft caps are not misplaced. Mount and tighten the camshafts caps one by one in an even manner so as to compress the valve springs prior to final torque, which should lie at 12nm (106 inch lbs.). For the purpose of aligning the sprockets, one could make use of a 25mm (1 inch) wrench on the hex of the camshafts. Gently move the sprockets with the Timing Chain in relation to the camshafts then remove j 44222 from the Cylinder Head. Install the new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt and the new exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt and tighten the intake to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) and rotate it 100 degrees more using the angle meter (J 45059). Use angle meter (J 45059) to loosen the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt, but do not fully remove it from its base. Tighten the bolt by 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and after that, turn it 135 ° in addition. Lastly, take out the j 44221 on the camshafts, reposition the intake Camshaft position (CMP) sensor, the exhaust Camshaft position (CMP) sensor, and the Camshaft cover.
