2005 GMC Canyon Cam Gear Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the inlet cam gear on 2005 GMC Canyon?
A: Before replacing the intake Camshaft sprocket obtain en-44217-45 (Chain Holding Tool) combined with j 44217 (Timing Chain Retention Tool) together with j 44221 (Camshaft Holding Tool) and j 45059 (Angle Meter). The first step requires removal of both the Camshaft cover as well as the intake Camshaft position (CMP) sensor. The #1 piston should reach top dead center on its compression stroke while the Crankshaft rotates clockwise until the exhaust Camshaft position actuator has delphi markings facing parallel to the cylinder head to cam cover mating surface. Use a marker to indicate the Timing Chain link directly next to the timing mark position on the intake Camshaft sprocket. To begin installation start with the j 44221 (Camshaft Holding Tool) on the camshafts backside while the j 44217 (Timing Chain Retention Tool) and en-44217-45 (Chain Holding Tool) go around a Timing Chain link near the Timing Chain shoe locations on both engine sides. Secure the wing-nuts after hooking in the tools. Thoroughly inspect and clean the intake Camshaft sprocket after removing it together with the sprocket bolt which needs to be discarded. The installation begins by guiding the marked link on the Timing Chain towards the timing mark of the new intake Camshaft sprocket with a 25 mm (1 inch) wrench fastened to the Camshaft hex. Attach the new intake Camshaft sprocket to its bmw mount and secure it with the new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt at 20 nm torque while rotating the bolt 100 degrees using the j 45059 (Angle Meter). The procedure ends by removing tools j 44217 and en-44217-45 and j 44221 before reinstalling the intake cmp sensor and replacing the Camshaft cover.
