- Q: How to replace the rear wheel axle shaft on 2006 Cadillac SRX?A: First support the vehicle before lifting it and take off both tire and wheel assembly. The wheel drive shaft Spindle Nut requires replacement by a new nut after each removal because follow-up usage of the original nut is forbidden. Place a drift or punch into the brake rotor before hitting against the caliper to stop Wheel Hub and bearing rotation then remove and discard the wheel drive shaft Spindle Nut. Once the drift or punch tool is removed you can take the knuckle assembly from the rear. A proper tool should be used to let go of the wheel drive shaft from the rear Differential so you can place the j 44394 (J 44394) seal protector. The worker must install the j 44394 into the Differential output shaft seal before wheel drive shaft installation and removal process since seal damage can occur. The j 44394 needs to be placed inside the Differential output shaft seal before you extract the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle along with discarding its retaining ring. Begin installation of new wheel drive shaft retaining rings by inserting them onto the splined shaft of the inner joint housing. Reinstall the j 44394 into its placement in the Differential output shaft seal with great care if you previously removed it. A careful installation of the wheel drive shaft to the Differential will minimize lubricant leaks by protecting the oil seal from damage. Position the wheel drive shaft in the Differential until the splines extend past the j 44394 before slowly extracting this tool from both output shaft and drive shaft areas. Install the drive shaft into the Differential until the stored ring securely engages and then check its full connection by applying pressure to the inner joint housing. Add the rear knuckle to the vehicle followed by installing the new Spindle Nut loosely. A drift or punch should be inserted into the brake rotor before tightening the spindle against the caliper to avoid Wheel Hub and bearing rotation. The new Spindle Nut should be utilized to draw the spindle toward the Wheel Hub before achieving a torque setting of 160 nm (118 ft. Lbs.). After removing the drift or punch from the rotor you should install the tire along with the wheel assembly then check the Differential lubricant levels before lowering the vehicle.
