    A: The first step to replace an Engine Control Module (ECM) requires the use of a diagnostic tool to measure the current engine oil life percentage for module programming purposes because omitting this procedure will set the oil life to 100 percent and enforce a 5,000 km (3,000 mi) oil change from the previous service. First disconnect the negative Battery Cable before removing the ecm cover to disconnect the body wiring harness electrical connector and the engine harness electrical connectors from the ecm. Touching the metal case to battery voltage must be prevented by disconnecting the side retaining tab so the ecm can be released from its bracket. After placing the ecm inside its bracket for installation you must attach its engine harness electrical connectors followed by the body wiring harness electrical connector to the ecm before putting back the ecm cover and restoring the negative Battery Cable. The completion process requires programming the ecm.
