2006 Chevrolet Colorado Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2006 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: When replacing Timing Chain and sprockets obtain the required tools which include the camshaft holding tool (J 44221) as well as the angle meter (J 45059). The technician requires two specific tools: the camshaft holding tool (J 44221) and angle meter (J 45059). Begin by removing the #1 cylinder spark plug, camshaft cover, camshaft position (CMP) sensor, and engine front cover. Rotate the Crankshaft clockwise until the #1 piston is at top dead center (TDC), ensuring the word delphi on the exhaust camshaft position actuator is parallel with the cylinder head to cam cover mating surface. The camshaft holding tool (J 44221) should be positioned at the camshafts' rear. Next, adjust the Timing Chain tensioner shoe inward before installing a tee to maintain the shoe's position. Begin by removing the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt followed by discarding both the exhaust camshaft position actuator and the intake camshaft sprocket bolt then the intake camshaft sprocket. Clear away the Timing Chain and Crankshaft sprocket. Afterward check for damage and thoroughly clean both elements. For installation, ensure the #1 piston is at tdc with the Crankshaft sprocket pin straight up. Feeding the Timing Chain through the cylinder head opening requires alignment of its darkened link with the intake camshaft sprocket's timing mark. Start by mounting the Timing Chain onto the Crankshaft sprocket where the dark link should intersect the sprocket's timing mark while engaging the alignment pin into the camshaft. Then secure the intake camshaft sprocket. Begin by screwing in a new intake camshaft sprocket bolt then tighten it to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) follow up by using the angle meter (J 45059) tool to turn the bolt another 100 degrees. Before installing the exhaust camshaft actuator advance the camshaft actuator completely until the dark link aligns with the timing mark on the actuator sprocket. Use an angle meter (J 45059) to slowly advance a new exhaust camshaft actuator bolt to 135 degrees but begin at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) of torque. After removing the tee from the Timing Chain tensioner install a new engine front cover while confirming that the dark links on the Timing Chain match the sprocket marks. Finally, reinstall the engine front cover, camshaft position (CMP) sensor, camshaft cover, and #1 cylinder spark plug.
