2006 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2006 Chevrolet SSR?
A: Start by removing the Starter motor followed by removing the crossmember brace and transmission cover bolt and cover only when necessary. First drain the engine oil before eliminating the engine Oil Filter and afterward tighten the Drain Plug and Oil Filter to their proper position. Vehicle owners with a 4l60-e automatic transmission must remove right side transmission bolt and stud along with left side bottom bolt if needed. Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector and pull the engine harness from its position in front of the Oil Pan. Start by first removing each Oil Pan bolt and then taking out the Oil Pan while using caps to seal any oil passageways. Remove the Oil Pan Gasket retaining rivets through drilling then discard both the gasket and rivets when removing them. New installation should not involve both keeping the original Oil Pan Gasket and using rivets to fix the new gasket onto the Oil Pan. Drop 5 mm (0.20 inch) sealant gm p/n 12378190 or its equivalent onto the front and rear cover gasket tabs extending into the Oil Pan. Make a bead that is 20 mm (0.80 inch) in length. Apply 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead of gm p/n 12378190 or equivalent sealant directly onto the engine block tabs that protrude into the Oil Pan surface. Then properly align the oil gallery passages before pre-assembling the Oil Pan Gasket to the pan and installing everything to the engine block. Start by tightening Oil Pan bolts until they turn snug before proceeding to install the transmission bolt/stud on the right side when using 4l60-e automatic transmission and finishing with the left-side bottom bolt if needed. Use torque to tighten all Oil Pan bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and Oil Pan rear cover bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) as well as the bellhousing, converter cover and transmission bolts/stud to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Reconnect the engine harness to the Oil Pan's front side then link the oil level sensor's electrical connector before placing the transmission cover in position and tightening its bolt to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Install the crossbar bolts and Starter motor followed by adding fresh engine oil with a new filter.
