2006 GMC Savana 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2006 GMC Savana 3500?
A: Start by removing inner axle housing nuts and washers from the bracket (only for vehicles with all-wheel drive AWD) but keep the front drive axle supported with a suitable jack in place. Start by removing mounting bolts and nuts from the differential carrier lower and upper section when the system includes all wheel drive. Then lower the front drive axle. First remove all transmission cover hardware including the transmission cover bolt and crossbar bolts and the crossbar followed by removing the transmission cover bolt and cover itself. Drain your vehicle's engine oil while you replace the engine Oil Filter by tightening both components until they reach the specified resistance. When working on vehicles equipped with 4l60-e automatic transmission you must remove both the right side transmission bolt along with the stud and the bottom bolt on the left side. 4l80-e automatic transmission owners should disassemble their transmission converter cover bolts first. Start by disconnecting the oil level sensor electrical connector and removing the battery cable channel bolt to slide the channel pin out of the Oil Pan tab before finally removing the positive battery cable clip bolt. Remove Oil Pan bolts then dismantle pan from its mount with care to block foreign substances from reaching oil passages. Use a drill to remove Oil Pan Gasket retention rivets and then eliminate the gasket before trashing the gasket and rivets. Check and inspect the engine Oil Pan according to need. For proper installation apply a 0.2 inch (5 mm) bead of gm p/n united states 12378190 or equivalent sealant to the front and rear cover gasket tab areas which extend into the Oil Pan surface on the engine block. Begin by mounting the Oil Pan Gasket to the pan. Then carefully position the gasket-and-pan assembly on the engine block. Tighten all Oil Pan bolts until they are firmly in place but do not overtorque them. When using the 4l80-e automatic transmission install transmission converter cover bolts until they reach a proper fit. Install first the transmission bolt and stud from the right side until tight then torque the bottom bolt located at the left side on the 4l60-e automatic transmission. Secure all Oil Pan shocks between the front and rear parts at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque and the Oil Pan and rear cover bolts at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). The converter cover and transmission bolt/stud require a tightening torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Fitting the positive battery cable's clip bolt needs a torque setting of 9 nm (80 inch lbs.) then slide the channel pin into the Oil Pan tab before installing the battery cable channel bolt which requires 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) torque. Connect the transmission sensor while installing the transmission cover and its bolt securely fastened to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). The crossbar bolts require a torque of 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) to complete installation. Conclude transmission bolt tightening at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) then hoist the front drive axle carefully before installing upper differential carrier bolt and nut loosely and lower bolt and nut at 100 nm (75 ft. Lbs.) followed by bracket washers and nuts with the same torque limit. Start by removing the front axle jack then install fresh engine oil as well as a new Oil Filter.
