2006 GMC Sierra 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a two-piece drive shaft on 2006 GMC Sierra 3500?
A: Start the replacement of the two-piece propeller shaft by obtaining the required tools which include clamp pliers - narrow jaw (J 43218). An exact reference system should mark all driveline parts in relation to axles and propeller shafts prior to disassembly to maintain the same component sequencing during reassembly. When working on a vehicle in the raised position you should establish reference marks which link the rear propeller shaft to its pinion yoke on the rear axle and the front propeller shaft to the transmission or Transfer Case. Use a flat bladed tool to pry up the clamp exposing its end if applicable to take it off the boot that secures the front propeller shaft stub shaft and the rear propeller shaft Slip Yoke. To proceed detach the rear axle pinion yoke bolts and yoke retainers before pulling the rear propeller shaft forward from the yoke. Perform this action without hitting the yoke ears. Use a proper method to separate the rear propeller shaft from its connection to the front propeller shaft stub shaft before taking it out from the automobile. The first step is boot removal from the front propeller shaft stub shaft then proceeding with removal of center bearing support nuts before taking out the center bearing support. The front propeller shaft requires slide-out motion either from the transmission or Transfer Case without rpo mw3 or m74 while vehicles with rpo mw3 or m74 must disconnect the front propeller shaft from the transmission pinion yoke by removing its bolts and retainer hardware. The first step of installation requires placing the front propeller shaft inside the transmission or Transfer Case while connecting it to the transmission pinion yoke (if present). Reinstall the yoke retainer components but do not torque the bolts since the bolts require completion at a later stage after aligning their reference marks to their initial position. Before tightening the center bearing support nuts to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.) the yoke retainer bolts must be fastened to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Check the splines of the front propeller shaft stub shaft for enough grease then apply chassis grease (GM P/N 12377985 or equivalent) if required. Mount both new clamps and the boot onto the front propeller shaft stub shaft as needed before mate the rear propeller shaft Slip Yoke to the stub shaft. You will place the rear propeller shaft onto its designated spot on the rear axle pinion yoke while matching reference marks before tightening the yoke retainers and bolts up to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Crimp the boot clamps using clamp pliers - narrow jaw (J 43218) until you reach required dimensions before lowering the vehicle.
