GMC Sierra 3500 Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front drive shaft on GMC Sierra 3500?
A: You should start the front propeller shaft replacement process by developing markings that represent the original arrangement between all driveline elements which include propeller shafts together with wheel drive shafts and output shafts and pinion flanges. The j 43218 clamp pliers (J 43218) allows you to open the rear propeller shaft boot clamp through its exposed end. Before disconnecting the front axle pinion yoke you must wrap bearing caps in tape to stop the loss of bearing rollers. The removal process for the propeller shaft should be performed without excessive force to minimize injection joint damage. Proceed with sliding the propeller shaft forward after removing its boot from the transfer case output shaft. Test the splines on the transfer case output shaft for appropriate lubrication and apply gm p/n 12345879 (Canadian P/N 10953511) or equivalent product if needed. The first step involves installing a new clamp onto the propeller shaft boot after which the propeller shaft splines should be inserted into the transfer case output shaft to become reconnected to the front axle pinion yoke using reference marks for alignment. Fasten the yoke retainers then tighten bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) while making sure the boot rests properly against the output shaft. Finish the work by crimping the rear propeller shaft boot clamp using j 43218 until the required dimensions are met. Then reinstall the transfer case shield if needed before lowering the vehicle.
