- Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft on 8.6 and 9.5 LD axles on 2007 Cadillac Escalade ESV?A: The process for swapping the primary gear between 8.6 and 9.5 ld axles begins with raising the vehicle before taking off the tire and wheel set. Begin by removing the brake caliper together with the rear Wheel Speed Sensor yet maintain the order of removing the rear cover along with its gasket. The pinion shaft locking bolt must be removed before continuing. Additionally, remove the pinion shaft except for axles that have locking differentials where the shaft should be pulled out enough to allow case rotation until the pinion shaft touches the housing. A screwdriver-shaped tool along with similar implements should help you turn the lock until it reaches proper alignment with the thrust block. Take the Axle Shaft flange toward the Differential while extracting the c-lock from the button end of the shaft to prevent the shaft from rotating that would misalign the gears. The housing needs to release the Axle Shaft. Place the Axle Shaft inside the rear axle housing then let the splines connect to the Differential side gear. The installation process requires placing the button end lock on axles without locking differentials but using c-lock on axles with locking differentials by positioning the pinion shaft partially exposed and lining the Axle Shaft ends with the thrust block. Move the shaft flange forward until both the Differential gear receives the lock and the shaft pinion hole sits directly above the Differential case bolt hole. Insert and tightly fasten the locking bolt on the shaft to 50 n.m (37 lb ft). You need to put back the rear Wheel Speed Sensor and the Brake Calipers together with the tire assembly and the rear cover and gasket. After filling the rear axle with required fluids you should lower the vehicle. The vehicle maintenance requires the slide hammer (J 2619-01) and axle remover (J 45859) as essential tools for this operation.
