2007 Chevrolet Express 3500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on a 4L80-E/4L85-E automatic transmission on 2007 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: A 4l80-e/4l85-e automatic transmission requires parking brake activation and neutral gear selection before replacing the park/neutral position switch. Start by lifting the vehicle before removing the manual shaft nut which attaches the transmission control lever followed by removal of the control lever. First disconnect the electrical connectors from the switch and next remove the bolts holding the park/neutral position switch to the transmission. Finally extract the switch from the manual shaft. Use a file to smooth any burrs from the manual shaft's outer edge because a smooth slide-off enables the switch removal. To install the switch hub flats must align with manual shaft flats before sliding the switch onto the shaft until its mounting bracket contacts transmission bosses. Installing a new switch includes a positive assurance bracket which obviates the necessity for using the neutral position adjustment tool. Screw in two bolts to the transmission switch but leave them loose before positioning the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) onto the switch with slots matching the tool's tabs. After orienting the tool so its upper locator pin matches the switch slot position tighten the bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Complete removal of the tool should also include elimination of the positive assurance bracket when present. Connect the electrical cords to the switch before installing the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft using the nut. Tighten the shaft nut to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Check the switch operations after vehicle positioning in p (Park) or n (Neutral) by lowering the car until you test the start function. Check the switch for operations then perform a replacement if the switch operates incorrectly.
