  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2007 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: To replace the Timing Chain and sprockets, the first step should involve removal of the Oil Pump, a rotation of the Crankshaft till the timing marks on Crankshaft and camshaft sprockets align such that the motor is not cranked once the Timing Chain has been removed to avoid damage to Piston assembles and valves. Next, unbolt the camshaft sprocket bolts as well as the camshaft sprocket, and Timing Chain. Use the j 8433 (J 8433), j41816 -2 (J41816-2), j 41478 (J41478), and the j41558 (J41558) in removing the Crankshaft sprocket and remove the Crankshaft sprocket and its key if necessary. Clean the Timing Chain and sprockets, check them and tap the key into the Crankshaft keyway until fully seated at both ends. Mount the Crankshaft sprocket onto the front of the Crankshaft aligning the key with the sprocket keyway using the j 41665 (J 41665) and j 41478 (J 41478) to mount the Crankshaft sprocket fully seated on the Crankshaft flange. As this Crankshaft sprocket rotates until the alignment mark is at the 12 o'clock position and the camshaft sprocket locating pin aligns with the sprocket alignment hole on the camshaft sprocket and sprocket teeth meshing with the Timing Chain and the alignment mark on the camshaft & Crankshaft sprockets are correctly aligned and the camshaft sprocket alignment mark at the 6 o'clock position. Mount the camshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain in its position, the camshaft or Crankshaft sprockets as may be required to match the timing marks on them, and mount and tighten the bolts on the camshaft sprocket to 35n.m (26 lb-ft) before reinstalling the Oil Pump.
