2008 Chevrolet Express 2500 Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2008 Chevrolet Express 2500?
A: The replacement process starts by taking out the radiator support followed by the engine front cover and then proceeding to remove the valve lifters. After removing the Camshaft sensor bolt and sensor you must spin the engine to match the Crankshaft and Camshaft sprocket timing marks yet ensure you never rotate the Crankshaft assembly after Timing Chain removal to prevent valve damage to piston assemblies. The process begins by taking out the Camshaft sprocket afterwards placing the Timing Chain appropriately before removing the Camshaft retainer bolts and retainer while showing caution due to all Camshaft journals sharing the same diameter to safeguard Camshaft bearings. The extraction process of the Camshaft requires three m8-1.25 x 100 mm (M8-1.25 x 4.0 in) bolts screwed into the front bolt holes of the Camshaft which can function as handles to safely rotate and remove the Camshaft from the engine block before removing the bolts. The engine block requires cleaning before checking both Camshaft and bearings for possible damage. Apply engine oil on both the Camshaft journals and bearings before installing the Camshaft through the engine block using the bolts that will be removed afterward. The retainer plate should be positioned with the sealing gasket toward the engine block where the gasket surface remains clean. Install the Camshaft retainer followed by bolts then tighten them to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After that install the Camshaft sprocket and time the chain before final bolt torque to 35 n.m (26 lb ft). The Camshaft sensor o-ring seal shows no damage so you should apply clean engine oil to it before installing the Camshaft sensor together with its bolt while tightening the bolt to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Install valve lifters together with the front cover and the radiator support.
