2008 Chevrolet Impala Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2008 Chevrolet Impala?
A: To depower and switch the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil, first disable the sir system. Make sure the wheels are straight ahead and the Steering Column is in lock before separating the Steering Column or intermediate shaft from the given steering gear to prevent the air bag clock spring assembly damaging. Make use of the Steering Column anti rotation pin (J 42640) to check if the Ignition Switch is lock. Take out the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft, pull out the tilt lever to a straight way if you are in the car that has a tilt column, and then separate the lower trim cover through taking out 2 torx(R) head screws and the upper trim cover through taking out 2 torx(R) head screws. Unhook the sterns of wire harness straps from the column of the Steering Wheel wire harness and take away the retaining ring until taping out the air bag clock spring. In case of replacing, dispose the old air bag clock spring. For installation, do not remove the centering tab until it is complete with it, and make sure that the new air bag clock spring assembly is centered. Align the air bag clock spring assembly with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Slide the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly and firmly seat the retaining ring into the groove. Remove and discard the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring, then install the upper trim cover using 2 torx® head screws and tighten to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in), and then install the lower trim cover using 2 torx® head screws also tightened to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Make sure the tabs of the lower trim cover interact with the upper trim cover, align and insert the tilt lever handle in the Steering Column, install the Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft, and most importantly, activate the sir system.
