2008 GMC Acadia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a CV Boot and CV Joint on a Rear Wheel Drive Shaft for Outer on 2008 GMC Acadia?
A: To removed the rear wheel drive shaft outer joint and boot, first gather the needed tools: Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) and Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). To start with, cut off the small seal clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar in a downward motion using side cutters discarding the article, without cutting into the wheel drive shaft trilobal tripot bushing. After that, cut off the large seal clamp from the tripot joint with side cutters and throw it away. Detach the wheel drive shaft out board seal from the trilobal tripot bushing and slide the seal off of the joint along the wheel drive shaft bar. Completely take out the housing from the tripot joint spider and wheel drive shaft bar, keeping the proper 60-degree offset between the inner and outer tripot spiders by marking the tripot spider focus on the wheel drive shaft bar before dismantling. With hammer and brass drift in hand, gently tap around the tripot spider face to compress the barrel retaining ring from the wheel drive shaft bar then remove the tripot spider and dispose of the barrel retaining ring. Check the wheel drive shaft outboard sealing, tripot joint spider assembly, housing, as well as trilobal tripot bushing for damage or wear. Mount the new small seal clamp to the small end of the joint seal and mount both on the wheel drive shaft bar mounting the small end of the joint seal into the joint seal groove. Apply the torque to the small seal retaining clamp with the Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572) and tighten to 136 N.m (100 lb ft). Replace an aging barrel retaining ring to the wheel drive shaft bar, ensuring that you have the correct 60-degree offset relationship. Line up the reference mark on the tripot spider with the wheel drive shaft bar, making sure the beveled edge of the tripot spider is facing the wheel drive shaft bar when assembling. Install the tripot spider by compressing the barrel retaining ring with a flat-bladed tool and checking for a hold by attempting to pull the tripot spider off of the wheel drive shaft bar. Make sure the trilobal tripot bushing lays against the face of the housing, then pour about half of the grease provided from the service kit onto the wheel drive shaft outboard seal and pour the rest of it into repacking the housing. Mount the trilobal tripot bushing to the housing, the spring with grease from the housing to keep it on, followed by the guide in the same way. Position the bigger new seal retaining clamp on the wheel drive shaft outboard seal, slide housing over the tripot joint spider assembly, and place the large diameter of the wheel drive shaft outboard seal into its groove. Check if the seal has the correct shape and fix it if required and locate the joint assembly in the correct dimension for the vehicle. Align the wheel drive shaft outboard seal, tripot housing, and large seal retaining clamp into latching, using the Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) to latch the large seal retaining clamp, making sure the latching tangs are fully engaged. Lastly, rotate the outer tripot housing a number of times, four or five times, so as to spread the grease by the tripot spider bearings.
