2009 Chevrolet Aveo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Front Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2009 Chevrolet Aveo?
A: First straighten the tires by Steering Wheel rotation until they face forward before you remove the intermediate shaft and front tire and wheel assemblies. As a first step extract power steering fluid from both Rack And Pinion then detach outlet and inlet pipe fittings from the Rack And Pinion and uninstall outer tie rod hex nuts. Before reconnecting the stabilizer shaft to the knuckle remove the ball joint hex nuts followed by separating the stabilizer shaft link assembly. Start by removing the cross member once the underbody bolts and nuts are fully loose before ending with Rack And Pinion assembly removal by disconnecting the Rack And Pinion retaining bracket nuts. When installing the Rack And Pinion assembly, connect the Rack And Pinion retaining bracket nuts then torque them to 50 nm (37 lb ft). When replacing the cross member, secure its nuts and bolts with a torque of 150 nm (111 lb ft). Secure the ball joint hex nuts before you attach the stabilizer shaft to the knuckle and tighten the ball joint hex nuts to 45 nm (33 lb ft) and the stabilizer shaft bolts to 45 nm (33 lb ft). Fasten the outer tie rod hex nuts while torquing them to 45 nm (33 lb ft) before you connect the Rack And Pinion inlet and outlet pipe fittings which also need a torque of 22 nm (16 lb ft). The front tire and wheel assemblies go back into place followed by power steering fluid refilling with gm spec. No. 9985010 or equivalent until the intermediate shaft installation can proceed. A complete inspection must be followed by wheel alignment measurements and necessary front toe adjustment.
