2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Boot on 2009 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: The process to replace the steering gear boot starts by taking out the Rack And Pinion gear and the outer tie rod off the vehicle. A total replacement of all boot parts is necessary during an inner tie rod change. The installation of the Rack And Pinion boot requires side cutters to remove both the small seal retaining clamp and the large seal retaining clamp from the boot without damaging the boot's end or inserting a screwdriver between the boot and tie rod. Check the inner tie rod shaft for deterioration or substances blocking it before continuing with the repair. Begin the repair if a replacement is not necessary. Use strong force to remove the Rack And Pinion boot from its position around the gear before disposal. The installation requires boot rib internal greasing followed by new large seal retaining clamp placement onto the boot structure. Place the boot onto the inner Tie Rod End with its arrows matching the gear housing range. Set the new small seal retaining clamp over the boot then direct the boot toward the center of the gear assembly until it locks in place within the inner tie rod retaining groove while preventing boot deformations. Use j 22610 (Keystone Clamp Pliers) to crimp both the large seal retaining clamp on boot as well as the small seal retaining clamp to the inner tie rod assembly. Finish the installation by putting back the rack-and-pinion gear along with the outer tie rod.
