2010 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain tensioner on 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: You must disconnect the car's negative Battery Cable as your first step when replacing the Timing Chain Tensioner. The first step involves removing the camshaft cover and Timing Chain Tensioner with subsequent removal of its seal. Check the Timing Chain Tensioner for damage before making replacements as needed for the tensioner and any o-ring seal or washer. Measure the length of the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly end-to-end. A new tensioner requires delivery in its fully compressed non-active state with a measurement of 72 mm (2.83 in) from end to end, while an active state tensioner extends to 85 mm (3.35 in). For the compressed tensioner install the j 45027-2 into a vise and insert the notch end of the Piston assembly before proceeding. The j 45027-1 allows you to turn the ratchet cylinder into the Piston assembly. Check the tensioner body bore for impairments and debris accumulation. Also examine it for damage. Remove all contaminants from the tensioner with a lint-free cloth and complete the replacement of any damaged tensioner unit. Position the compressed Piston assembly within the Timing Chain Tensioner body so the bottom stop point is reached without bottom contact and verify it extends to approximately 72 mm (2.83 in) from end to end. Thoroughly remove all contaminants from the Timing Chain Tensioner hole in the Cylinder Head before installing the tensioner unit while securing it to 75 nm (55 lb ft). To unlock the tensioner use a rubber tipped tool to compress the mechanism 2 mm (0.079 in) and administer a strong diagonal downward motion to break the lock. You need to fully install the camshaft cover and then reattach the negative Battery Cable.
