2010 Chevrolet Corvette Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2010 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the intermediate Steering Shaft, first turn the steering wheel to the left in order to access the upper coupling bolt and remove it. If using a steering wheel that does not have a locking collar in the steering column, ensure the steering wheel is secured in position using the steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation, and this will protect the sir system from damage. Upon detaching steering column, intermediate shaft(s), and steering gear, do not turn steering wheel or move front tires to prevent sir coil assembly from becoming un-centered. Place (J 42640) into the steering column access hole to secure the steering column and remove the lower coupling shield and the lower coupling retaining bolt. Attach (J 42640) to the steering column, remove the lower coupling from the steering gear and slide the upper coupling from the steering column shaft to remove the intermediate shaft. To install, fit new intermediate shaft into the vehicle, slip the upper coupling onto the steering column shaft, and attach lower coupling to steering gear. Fit the lower coupling retaining bolt and tighten it to 27 nm (20 lb ft). Depress (J 42640) from the steering column, unlock it, and turn the steering wheel to the left to reach the hole of the upper coupling bolt. Fit the upper coupling bolt and tighten it to 48 nm (35 lb ft). Lastly, turn the steering wheel to the right again, and make the wheels straight ahead before also locking the steering column and install the lower steering coupling shield, tightening it against the shield screw to 3.5nm (31 lb in).
