How to service and repair the steering shaft, lower bearing, and jacket on Chevrolet Corvette?

As a first step to service or repair the steering shaft with its bearing and jacket users need to disable the SIR system. Disassemble the system by removing the wiper/washer switch bracket, tilt spring, steering shaft seal, sensor retainer, sensor assembly, and adapter and bearing assembly. Attach the J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover to separate the 2 pivot pins found in the steering column support assembly. Pull the tilt lever to disengage the steering column lock shoes from their position on the dowel pins in the steering column tilt head housing assembly. Disassemble the jacket assembly by taking the steering column tilt head housing assembly and steering shaft assembly together before removing the steering shaft from the tilt head housing assembly. Sliding markers on the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly prevents wrong assembly which would lead to a 180-degree steering wheel misalignment. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly to a 90-degree position so its disengagement from the lower steering shaft assembly becomes possible before screw removal of the 4 TORX head screws. The steering column support assembly needs to be reinstalled onto the steering column jacket assembly while securing the installation with 4 TORX head screws tight to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). The exposed shaft engagement areas on the centering sphere need GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516) application before the lower steering shaft assembly can be installed to meet the race and upper shaft assembly. Feed the steering shaft assembly into the steering column tilt head housing assembly . Next install both the steering column tilt head housing assembly and the steering shaft assembly to the steering column jacket assembly. Put the 2 pivot pins back into the steering column support assembly but replace it if you've staked it more than 3 times. Then stake the pivot pin positions properly. The final step will be installing the adapter and bearing assembly followed by the sensor assembly and sensor retainer and steering shaft seal and wiper/washer switch bracket and tilt spring after enabling the SIR system.
