2006 Chevrolet Corvette Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower bearing and jacket of the telescoping steering shaft on 2006 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The SIR system requires disablement before beginning to replace either the lower bearing or jacket on the telescoping steering shaft. The first steps include removing the signal switch housing along with the tilt spring and telescoping actuator assembly and telescoping motor assembly. Start by disassembling the equipment which consists of steering shaft seal , sensor retainer , sensor assembly , lower spring retainer , adapter and bearing assembly , jacket hole plug. The 2 pivot pins in the steering column support assembly require removal using the Pivot Pin Remover (J 21854-01). Remove the jacket assembly's steering column tilt head housing assembly by releasing the steering column lock shoes from their dowel pins then extract the assembly with attached steering shaft. After the steering shaft assembly leaves the steering column tilt head housing assembly you must mark both the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly for proper reinstallation. First rotate the race and upper shaft assembly at a 90-degree angle so it can disengage from the lower steering shaft assembly. Then remove the 4 TORX head screws to detach the steering column support assembly from the jacket assembly. Attachment of the steering column support assembly to the jacket assembly requires new parts if staked 3 times before tightening all screws to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). Instructive instructions on the GM part number 12345718 or Canadian part number 10953516 specify application onto the centering sphere shaft engagement surfaces before installing the lower steering shaft assembly to link with the race and upper shaft assembly. The steering shaft assembly receives placement into the steering column tilt head housing assembly and connects to the jacket assembly. Zero in the 2 pivot pins to the steering column support assembly before replacing it if it needs to be restaked 3 times then stake the pivot pin locations. Install the adapter and bearing assembly to the steering shaft assembly and follow by fitting the lower spring retainer and sensor assembly and sensor retainer and steering shaft seal before rotating the steering shaft assembly to 12 o'clock. End the installation process by adding the telescoping motor assembly together with the tilt spring and signal switch housing before enabling the SIR system.
