2006 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Rack and Pinion Boot for Off Vehicle on 2006 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Before boot installation on the vehicle begin by using keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) to detach the hex jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly along with the outer tie rod. To detach the ring clamp on the tie rod end you must first separate it from the Rack and Pinion Boot then cut off the boot clamp from the Rack and Pinion Boot with side cutters before discarding the old clamp. Next remove the Rack and Pinion Boot which fits over the Rack And Pinion gear assembly. When assembly time arrives put a new boot clamp onto the Rack and Pinion Boot then coat the inner tie rod assembly and Rack And Pinion gear assembly with grease before securing the new Rack and Pinion Boot onto the inner tie rod assembly to ensure proper seating in the gear assembly groove. The keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) are used to install and crimp the boot clamp onto the Rack and Pinion Boot following necessary boot adjustments. To finish the installation place the pinch pliers over the tie rod end clamp before reattaching the hex jam nut back onto the inner tie rod assembly.
