Check the Steering Column bracket assembly capsules for proper mounting in their slots while inspecting any loose assembly conditions by pushing or pulling the hand. Evaluation of bracket-jacket assembly connection should be performed before making any replacements; bracket changes alone are necessary only when capsule placement is inadequate. You need to replace only the jacket assembly if the bracket is welded to it while the capsules remain unstated. The measurement of the distance between the lower edge of the upper jacket and a specified marker on the lower jacket serves to detect jacket assembly collapse. When the measurement reveals improper dimensions you must replace the complete jacket assembly. Check the Steering Shaft for sheared plastic material through visual inspection because Steering Shaft replacement is necessary when the examination reveals sheared plastic material. Steering Shaft runout measurements using a dial indicator at the Steering Shaft base must be checked for all vehicles where frame damage could cause a bent Steering Shaft. The measurement result should not surpass 1.60 mm (0.06 inch).
