2005 Chevrolet Corvette Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2005 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The failure replacement begins with using j 42640 Steering Column lock pin (J 42640) to lock the Steering Column through left-wheel steering for accessing upper coupling bolt exposure. Proceed with the removal in this order: upper coupling bolt first followed by lower coupling shield and lower coupling retaining bolt. The j 42640 should enter the Steering Column to maintain orientation before you can separate the lower coupling from the steering gear and remove the upper coupling from the Steering Column shaft. Install the new intermediate shaft into the vehicle followed by sliding the upper coupling onto the Steering Column shaft. Fasten the lower coupling to the steering gear using a torque of 34 nm (25 foot lbs). You need to remove the j 42640 tool from the Steering Column before unlocking the column then rotating the wheel left until the upper coupling bolt access hole is visible. Fasten the upper coupling bolt to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) during installation. After locking the Steering Column you should turn the wheel to the right with wheels facing forward then place the lower steering coupling shield into position and fasten the shield screw to a torque of 3.5 nm (31 inch lbs.).
