2004 Chevrolet Corvette Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: First, use the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to lock the Steering Column and turn the Steering Wheel to the right until the wheels are straight ahead. After that, in order to remove the intermediate Steering Shaft, insert a tap tone tool (J45100) with a serial output next to the top of the Steering Shaft. Turn the tap tone tool clockwise until it contacts the Steering Shaft nut step and measures minimum resistance. Start by steering the Steering Wheel left to reach the upper coupling bolt, then take the upper coupling bolt away and the low pair coupling shield. Secondly, remove the lower coupling retaining bolt and insert the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) into the Steering Column. Take off the lower coupling on the steering gear and pull the upper coupling off the Steering Column shaft but remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle. For installation, mount the newly added intermediate shaft of the vehicle, sliding the upper coupling onto the Steering Column shaft, and then join lower coupling at the steering gear. Tighten the lower cpl. Retaining bolt into place to 34 nm(25 ft. Lbs.). Unlock the Steering Column by removing the Steering Column lock pin (J42640), and turn the Steering Wheel to the left so as to reach the upper coupling bolt hole. Tighten the upper coupling bolt to 48 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) and turn the Steering Wheel to the right until the wheels reach the straight ahead position and lock the Steering Column. Finally, install the lower steering coupling shield and tighten the shield screw using 3.5 nm (31 inch lbs.).
