2010 GMC Sierra 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft timing chain, sprocket, and tensioner on 2010 GMC Sierra 1500?
A: Before replacing the camshaft Timing Chain components start by removing the Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor reluctor ring. A 7/16-20 x 1 inch bolt must be installed into the Crankshaft end with correct timing mark positioning as a protective measure against piston-valve contact before pulling the Timing Chain. Line up both sprocket timing marks when the number 4 cylinder reaches top dead center compression position. Tear the Timing Chain tensioner shoe away from the tensioner pin but do not remove it. Next take out the camshaft sprocket bolts then remove the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain. Remove the Crankshaft sprocket using j 5825-a along with an open-end wrench followed by removing the Crankshaft balancer key from the engine. To inspect the Timing Chain and sprockets properly you need to remove the Timing Chain tensioner bracket bolt, bracket, clean each component then perform an inspection. Install the Timing Chain tensioner bracket first, then tighten its bolt to 12 nm (106 lb in) torque. Slip the key into the Crankshaft keyway and position it parallel to slightly inclined before aligning the keyway of the Crankshaft sprocket with the balancer key. Follow j 5590 procedure to place the Crankshaft sprocket while maintaining the camshaft sprocket alignment mark at its 6 o'clock position. Guiding the Timing Chain to encircle the Crankshaft sprocket, position it on the engine's driver side. Place the bottom edge of the Timing Chain tensioner shoe beneath the bracket tab before you slide in the camshaft Timing Chain sprocket. Position the sprocket to match up with the camshaft timing marks. You should tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 25 nm (18 lb ft) torque specifications with the Crankshaft sprocket at 12 o'clock and the camshaft sprocket at 6 o'clock. For the installation process remove the bolt from the Crankshaft then install the ckp sensor reluctor ring.
