Chevrolet Classic A/C Clutch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Clutch assembly on Chevrolet Classic?
A: To replace the compressor clutch assembly one would first remove the compressor and remove also the three adjustable dowels from the j 37872 universal spanner wrench and replace these three adjustable dowels with three 5/16 x 1 inch bolts. Then, remove the compressor clutch plate bolt, and with the aid of the j 37872, hold the compressor clutch plate from spinning it during removal. Finally, using the j 6083 snap ring pliers, lift out the compressor pulley snap ring and compressor pulley, then the compressor clutch coil snap ring and finally the clutch coil. For installation, clean the threads for the clutch plate bolts with an m6x1.0 tap and blast out with compressed air before installing the compressor clutch coil and its snapring using the j 6083. Mount the compressor pulley complete with snap ring and apply a little oil to the 0.4 mm (0.016 in) air gap shim and insert it into the drive plate of clutch before fitting the clutch plates. Make sure that drive plate does not rub with the pulley, verify air gap by creating a 0.3-0.6 mm (0.012-0.024 in), and ensure the new drive plate bolt is coated with colored adhesive for at least five threads before it is installed. Tighten the compressor clutch drive plate bolt to 12n.m (9 lb ft) by using the j 37872 to clamp the compressor clutch plate to prevent it from turning, and reassemble the compressor and test for leakage in the fittings with j 39400-a.
