Chevrolet Malibu Timing Chain Tensioner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the timing chain tensioner on Chevrolet Malibu?
A: First disconnect the negative Battery Cable, in order to change the Timing Chain Tensioner. Next proceed to remove the camshaft cover and then remove the Timing Chain Tensioner, followed by the seal from the tensioner. Check the damaged Timing Chain Tensioner. If the tensioner, o-ring seal, or washer is damaged, replace them if necessary. Measure the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly from end to end; a new tensioner should be supplied in a fully compressed non-active state = 72 mm (2.83 in) and an active state tensioner = 85 mm (3.35 in). When the tensioner is not in the compressed state, take the Piston assembly out of the body and secure it in a vise, then turn in the notch end of the Piston assembly into the vise and use a suitable tool to turn the ratchet cylinder to the Piston. Clean the bore of the tensioner body of dirt or damage with a lint-free cloth, removing any debris. Install the compressed Piston assembly into the Timing Chain Tensioner body without compressing it to the bottom of the bore and making it roughly 72 mm (2.83 in) in overall length from end to end; if not, continue the previous steps. Make sure all particles of dirt and debris are eliminated from the Timing Chain Tensioner threaded hole in the Cylinder Head, and place the Timing Chain Tensioner assembly, and tighten up to 75 Nm (55 lb ft). Release the Timing Chain Tensioner by compressing it 2 mm (0.079 in) with the help of a suitable tool with a rubber tip applying a sharp diagonal (downwards) jolt. Finally, mount the camshaft cover and reconnect the negative battery.
