  Q: How to replace the Power Steering Reservoir on Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Classic?

  A: Draining the power steering fluid from the Power Steering Pump must happen before you can start the replacement of the Power Steering Reservoir on the vehicle. First detach the pump mounting studs as well as the connector and fitting assembly. First you must remove the variable assist steering actuator and its retaining ring followed by pulling out the o-ring seal from the connector and fitting assembly. The assembler should eliminate the control valve assembly with flow control spring from the pump housing assembly only if needed. Remove the reservoir assembly from the pump housing assembly before taking out the o-ring seals (1, 4) together with the magnet to clean it. The Power Steering Pump housing requires inspection of the welch plug for any sign of deformation or dislodgement; when these conditions occur replace the Power Steering Pump housing. During assembly install new o-ring seals that received power steering fluid lubrication to the pump housing assembly and control valve assembly with flow control spring before placing o-ring seals (1, 4) and magnet inside the pump housing assembly. Use new o-ring seals that have power steering fluid lubrication and attach the reservoir assembly to the pump housing assembly for installation of the o-ring seal. Install the connector with fitting assembly along with the variable assist steering actuator that includes retaining ring. The pump mounting studs should be placed on the pump housing before tightening them to 58 nm (43 ft. Lbs) along with the connector and fitting assembly requiring 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs).
