GMC Canyon 4WD Actuator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the 4WD Actuator on the Transfer Case on GMC Canyon?
A: Vehicle elevation and support are necessary before starting a Transfer Case Encoder Motor replacement operation. Lift the mechanical connection between the electrical wires and ventilation tube inside the encoder motor. The encoder motor requires removal after unbolting its mount and extracting the motor along with the O-ring seal while discarding the O-ring seal. The actuator shaft needs to be set to neutral during the replacement steps but the encoder motor should not provide power for this movement. Apply some clean transfer case fluid to the new O-ring seal then place it in the transfer case while aligning the encoder motor to sit flat on the transfer case surface. The encoder motor should receive correct positioning relative to the actuator shaft then secure the encoder motor mounting bolts and heated oxygen sensor bracket with correct torque settings at 22 N.m (16 lb ft). Lower the vehicle by reconnecting both the encoder motor's electrical connector and vent hose.
