GMC Sierra 3500 Power Steering Reservoir Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Power Steering Reservoir on GMC Sierra 3500?
A: The replacement procedure for the Power Steering Reservoir starts by draining power steering fluid that exists inside the pump. Start by removing pump mounting studs then disconnecting the connector and fitting assembly before taking out the variable assist steering actuator and retaining ring. Separate the o-ring seal that is present in the connector and fitting assembly. You should remove the control valve assembly as well as the flow control spring from the pump housing assembly if required. The reservoir assembly should be taken out of the pump housing assembly along with both o-ring seals and the magnet for cleaning purposes. The Power Steering Pump housing requires inspection of its welch plug in place without removal. A damaged or loose welch plug demands a housing replacement. The process of assembly begins with use of power steering fluid to lubricate new o-ring seals. First install the control valve assembly with added flow control spring on the pump housing assembly and proceed to add the o-ring seals and the magnet. Wafer-coat the o-ring seal for the reservoir assembly and place it between the reservoir and the pump housing assembly. Install the connector and fitting assembly followed by the variable assist steering actuator together with the retaining ring. Attach the pump mounting studs to the pump housing while tightening them to 58 nm (43 ft. Lbs.) and secure the connector and fitting assembly at 75 nm (55 ft. Lbs.).
