Intermediate Cable

The first step to replace front parking brake cables involves releasing the park brake then taking out the park brake pedal. First access the cable grommet through the carpet rolling back before lifting and supporting the vehicle. First detach the Floor Pan grommet and cable after which remove the front cable from the intermediate cable then remove the cable from the body mount through retaining tab depression. Insert the new cable into the body mount through the retaining tabs while connecting it to the intermediate cable before passing it through the Floor Pan grommet. Lower the vehicle then roll the carpet back and install the park brake pedal followed by performing adjustment on the park brake system.

Performing the installation of the right side parking brake rear cable for drum brakes starts with releasing the park brake and elevating the vehicle. Start the replacement process by lowering tension from the park brake cables through front cable tension at the equalizer point. First remove the right park brake cable from the equalizer after which you should detach the park brake cable from its frame bracket and guidance system. The cable clip bolt at the rear axle housing needs removal followed by taking the right cable away from its clip situated on top of the rear axle housing. The Parking Brake Cable release tool (J 37043) should be used to detach the park brake cable from the vehicle after braking shoe removal. You need to fasten the park brake cable onto the backing plate before you return the rear brake shoes to their position. Install the clip at the rear axle housing then put the cable clip bolt in position before tightening it to 22 nm (16 ft. Lbs.). The right cable must be placed above the clip on top of the rear axle housing while installing the park brake cable through frame brackets and guides followed by a connection to the equalizer. As the last step adjust the park brakes then lower the vehicle.

Vehicle elevation must commence after releasing the park brake when you start to replace the right rear Parking Brake Cable with drum brakes. The front park brake cable needs to have downward force applied in front of the equalizer to reduce tension on the cable system. The right park brake cable must be disconnected from the equalizer followed by a cable disconnection from both frame bracket and guides. Start by taking off the cable clip bolt at the rear axle housing and then remove the right cable from the clip on top of the housing. The Parking Brake Cable release tool (J 37043) allows you to eliminate the park brake cable from your vehicle. To put the units in place start by connecting the backing plate to the park brake cable and then press the rear brake shoes back into position. Install the cable clip onto the rear axle housing and put in the cable clip bolt while tightening it to 22 n.m (16 lb ft). Place the right cable over the top of the rear axle housing clip while installing the park brake cable through its frame bracket and guiding components to connect it at the equalizer. Finish the process by adjusting the park brakes when the vehicle reaches its lowest position.

Pull down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer and install the left park brake cable to the equalizer bar.

Pull it down in front of the equalizer and disconnect the right park brake cable from the equalizer bar.

Disengage the grommet and cable from the floor pan, then disconnect the front cable from the intermediate cable.

Disconnect the intermediate cable from the front cable and remove the intermediate cable from the vehicle.

Take out the rear cable mounting bracket bolt and disconnect the cable from the lever.

Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.

Lower the vehicle and adjust the park brake.

Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster and adjust the park brake accordingly.

Tighten the park brake cable clip bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
