Steering Column

The Steering Column must undergo detailed evaluation after frame damage or major body or sheet metal damage happens to vehicles along with cases of impacted steering columns and deployments of supplemental inflatable restraint systems. Check the positioning of Steering Column bracket assembly capsules as they should be tightly situated within bracket slots while examining loose conditions through manual pushing and pulling. The bracket needs replacement because securely seated capsules are not present while the bracket gets bolted to the jacket assembly. A jacket assembly replacement is needed when capsules do not sit properly in brackets especially when the bracket is welded to the jacket assembly. Regular inspections should identify any instance of tab breakage on bearing and adapter assemblies while a visual check should determine if sheared injected plastic exists on the Steering Shaft; both require replacement when detected. The Steering Shaft runout should be checked through dial indicator measurement of the lower end Steering Shaft position as the wheel is rotated and the maximum permitted runout remains under 1.60 mm (0.06 inch).
