Steering Column

Vehicles that sustained frame damage or substantial body or sheet metal damage or impacts affecting the Steering Column along with vehicles where supplemental inflatable restraint systems automatically activated may have a compromised or misaligned Steering Column. First check that the Steering Column bracket assembly capsule fittings properly sit within the bracket slots then inspect whether manual pressure applied from hand causes any movement. Check that the bracket joins properly to the jacket assembly because capsule insecurity will require new brackets. The replacement action should be limited to the jacket assembly when the brackets show both unfit capsule seating and the weld connection to the jacket assembly. You need to check the jacket assembly condition by measuring from the bottom of the upper jacket to the defined lower jacket point. Replace the entire jacket assembly if these dimensions fall outside of specified parameters. Bearing and adapter assembly tab breakage needs inspection while the Steering Shaft needs visual assessment for sheared plastic material; replace the shaft when sheared plastic is detected. The dial indicator must be used to check the Steering Shaft runout through lower end measurements as the wheel turns until reaching 1.60 mm (0.0625 in) specifications.

Replace only the jacket assembly.
