Accident-damaged vehicles displaying both frame damage and major body and sheet metal damage and Steering Column impact with supplemental inflatable restraint system deployment issues require inspection. Examine the capsules present on the Steering Column bracket assembly. The framework of capsules should rest snugly within bracket openings as you verify that no loose elements surface when you test with manual pressure on these components. Take note of how the bracket connects to the jacket assembly. Secure placement of capsules is essential for bracket operation but bolted attachment to jacket assembly requires bracket replacement only. The jacket assembly requires replacement when both secure capsule seating and bracket welds fail to meet requirements. Measure the distance from the jacket's lower edge to a predefined mark on the lower jacket as a test for jacket assembly collapse. The jacket assembly needs replacement when measurement results show dimensions outside of permissible limits. Inspect tabs on the bearing and adapter assembly for any signs of damage. Carefully check the Steering Shaft for sheared plastic material which appears injected into it. Replace the Steering Shaft when sheared plastic appears on the Steering Shaft. Frame destruction capable of creating a bent Steering Shaft must lead to a runout check of the assembly. Regularly position the dial indicator at the Steering Shaft's lower end to evaluate its runout which must stay under 1.60 mm (0.0625 inch).
