    Q:
What Tools Are Required for Servicing and Repairing the CV Joint, Specifically for the Wheel Drive Shaft Outer Joint and Seal Replacement on Chevrolet Cavalier? Posted by Customer
    A:
In order to service and repair the constant velocity joint, to be precise for the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal replacement the following set of tools will be needed. J41398 cv puller (J41398), j2619-01 sliding hammer assembly (J2619-01), and j35910 seal clamp tool (J35910). First, take out the large seal retaining clamp from the CV Joint with a side cutter and discard it, then the small seal retaining clamp from the halfshaft bar. Disengage the CV Joint seal from the CV Joint race at the wide diameter and pull the latter in the direction of the halfshaft bar. Remove the grease from the face of the CV Joint inner race. Measure the distance between a reference mark on the halfshaft bar and the face of the CV Joint inner race before removing the CV Joint assembly; record the figure. Clamp j41398 into a vise, mount the j2619-01 to the outer end of the j41398, then attach the j41398 to the threaded outside of the CV Joint outer race to evacuate the CV Joint from the halfshaft bar. Disassemble the retaining ring and take off the CV Joint seal from the halfshaft bar. Use a brass drift finished with a hammer, to displace the CV Joint cage and eliminate all six chrome alloy balls. Clean all parts and look for wear or damage, replacing worn or damaged parts. For assembly, apply very little grease on the ball grooves and insert the inner race into the cage together with ensuring that it is properly aligned with the outer race. Mount the cage and inner race to the outer race, and then the chrome alloy balls. Pack the CV Joint with grease, the new small retaining clamp and slide the CV Joint seal on the halfshaft bar, showing the reference mark. Place the large seal retaining clamp around the joint seal, place a new retaining ring, and check the distance to confirm that it aligns with the pre-disassembly value within ±1 mm, crimp the small retaining clamp using the j35910 in correct position and tighten to 136 nm. Lastly, dispose of the remaining grease and place it inside the seal, push the large diameter of seal over the CV Joint, and complete the crimping of the seal retain clamp at 176 nm while checking the gap dimension as required.
