    Q:
How to service and repair the rear drive axle shaft on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
To service and repair the rear Axle Shaft, at first, lift up the vehicle and remove the tire and wheel assembly, thereafter Brake Drum(s) and axle housing cover are removed. Then, remove the pinion shaft lock bolt and the pinion shaft. Push the Axle Shaft into the housing to release the c-lock from the button side then take out the Axle Shaft from the housing, and mark it as left or right. For installation, lubricate the Axle Shaft wheel bearing surface and the oil seal surface with axle lubricant and have the right axle installed on the right side without damaging oil seal to make sure the splined end locked to the splines of rear axle side gear. Mount the Axle Shaft into housing and install the c-lock, pulling the Axle Shaft to seat the c-lock into the counterbore of the rear axle side gear. Put the pinion shaft in the case and pinions and apply loctite(R) 242 to the threads of the locking bolt from the differential pinion shaft to prevent loosening when reinstalling. Machining the hole of the pinion shaft should be aligned to the lock bolt hole and a lock bolt should be installed but tightened to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Mount a new gasket onto the axle housing cover, remount the Brake Drum(s), and the tire and wheel assembly. Finally, lower the vehicle and test the operation of the rear axle.
