    Q:
How should one safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on Buick Rendezvous? Posted by Customer
    A:
Any attempt to remove the snap ring from within the shock absorber's top tube should be avoided due to the strong force potential that could seriously harm you. Safety glasses must be worn when centerpunching and drilling the shock absorber while avoiding puncturing of the tube. Use a centerpunch to indent the tube bottom 10 mm (0.4 in) from its lowest point. Position the shock absorber inside a vise in the horizontal orientation when the shock absorber rod exists in its fully extended position. Make a hole through the shock absorber at the centerpunch location by using a 5 mm (3/16 in) drill bit to drain gas or gas/oil mixture from the system; Place shop towels underneath to catch the leaking oil. Drill another hole at the middle of the tube using the 5 mm (3/16 in) drill bit positioned where the centerpunch marked it while using shop towels to absorb the escaping oil. Complete draining the shock absorber oil by holding it horizontally with the holes facing downwards in a drain pan while moving the rod through the tube.
