The snap ring inside the gas charged shock absorber tube holds high pressure gas thus removing it could result in dangerous forced ejection so avoid attempting this task altogether. Safety glasses should always be worn during centerpunching and drilling procedures to avoid drilling through the shock absorber tube. Start the process by using a centerpunch tool to create a 0.4 inch indentation on the tube at 10 mm distance from its base. Mount the shock absorber horizontally inside a vise with the shock absorber rod sitting in its fullest extension. The centerpunch mark requires drilling by using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit so gas or a gas/oil mixture can escape, while shop towels should be used to catch the leaking oil. A second piercing hole goes inside the tube at the middle point using a centerpunch. Drill this area using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit to let oil escape while using shop towels for containment. Operate the rod inside the tube to drain the oil while keeping the shock absorber horizontally above a drain pan with the holes pointing downward.

Reconnect the ESC link rod if equipped, remove the safety stands, and lower the vehicle.
