Air Bag Sensor

In order to change for the inflatable restraint side impact sensor, you must first disarm the SIR system. Do not hit or jar the sensor, and be sure that it is securely fastened before powering to avoid deployment or injury. First, detach the front end of the car by removing the lower trim of the center pillar, then loosen 2 fasteners on the sensor. Carefully take the sensor out of the center pillar then disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) from the side impact sensor connector before finally disconnecting the connector. To install, remove any dirt or grease from the mounting surface and attach the side impact sensor connector and the CPA. Place the sensor on the center pillar , with the arrow in the direction of the front of the vehicle , and attach it to the fasteners , tightening it to 10 N.m (89 lb in). Lastly, install the center pillar lower trim and activate the SIR system.

Service procedures for the inflatable restraint side impact sensor (SIS) require disabling the SIR system first. Before powering the SIS keep it secured to the mounting points through proper fasteners to protect yourself from accidental deployment or harm. Start by taking out the lower trim from the center pillar and unstow the 2 fasteners that hold the inflatable restraint side impact sensor. Afterward, extract the sensor from the center pillar. Processing begins with disconnecting the connector position assurance (CPA) from the side impact sensor connector followed by disconnection of the connector. Before installation wipe off the mounting area from contaminants then add the side impact sensor connector and place the CPA into position. Place the side impact sensor onto the center pillar while keeping its arrow-side forward. Fasten the sensor with the provided hardware until it achieves 10 N.m (89 lb in) torque through hand tightening. Reinstall the center pillar lower trim before enabling SIR system operation.

The SIR/side air bag sensor requires replacement after any accident that causes damage to the vehicle structure including compression or deformation of parts from a front-end vehicle collision with a tree. The sensor needs replacement no matter what condition the air bags are in or how the sensor seems to be doing since hidden dangers such as bracket deformation or wire insulation breakage could cause SIR/side air bag sensing system malfunctions. It is unsafe to evaluate the sensor's condition for potential damage. simply replace it. A sensor needs replacement whenever it displays an indicator through Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) tables.

Attach the side impact sensor to the center pillar.

Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) from the side impact sensor connector and disconnect the side impact sensor connector.

Lift the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect the yellow 2-way harness connector from the inflatable restraint side impact sensor.

First, disable the SIR system.
