How to replace the brake backing plate on Chevrolet Prizm? Posted by Customer

The Brake Backing Plate replacement process requires removal of rear brake shoes (6, 14) and then Wheel Cylinder followed by the rear axle hub and finally the Parking Brake Cable from the backing plate. Remove the backing plate once all elements are extracted. The installation process starts with the rear axle hub and then proceeds with the Wheel Cylinder and finishes with the rear brake shoes (6, 14).

    Q:
How to replace the front disc brake dust shields on Chevrolet Prizm? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step to replace a front disc brake dust shield is to raise and support your vehicle before removing the front tire and wheel assembly. Detach the abs wheel speed sensor bolt when the system is present then remove the sensor from the Steering Knuckle to position it aside. Remove the front brake hose bolt along with the hose from the strut and place them separately. The front brake rotor and Steering Knuckle removal is possible without separating the front Ball Joint from the vehicle. Use the j 23907 slide hammer (J 23907) with j 26941 drive sprocket support bearing cup remover (J 26941) to extract the inner oil seal after securing the Steering Knuckle in a soft jawed vise and removing the inner seal shield. Extract the front wheel bearing retainer with snap ring pliers before removing the brake dust shield bolts with a t30 torx wrench. The installation requires use of the j 25287 clutch coil puller (J 25287) together with the j 35378 bearing puller pilot (J 35378) to extract the hub and brake dust shield from the Steering Knuckle, then separately detach the brake dust shield from the hub. Affix the brake dust shield to the Steering Knuckle and tighten three bolts with a torx wrench (T30) to 8.3 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Install the hub to a press facing downwards with wheel studs at the bottom before sliding on the Steering Knuckle while avoiding damage to the bearing. Use the j 35399 differential side bearing cup remover (J 35399) and the j 8092 driver handle (J 8092) together with a press to push the hub into the Steering Knuckle. The j 35737-02 inner oil seal installer (J 35737-02) along with snap ring pliers allows installation of the front wheel bearing retainer before the application of gclb grease (GM P/N 1051344 or equivalent) to insert the inner seal into the Steering Knuckle. The holes for abs speed sensor must be aligned in both the inner dust shield and Steering Knuckle before fitting the inner seal shield. Replace the knuckle within the vise while attaching the ball stud to the vehicle and afterward fitting the brake rotor. Attach the front brake hose and matching strut bolt then tighten the bolt with 29 nm torque force (22 ft.lbs torque). Secure the abs wheel speed sensor to the knuckle with its corresponding bolt and torque it to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.) final torque value. After restoring the tire assembly to its place and lowering the vehicle, measure the front wheel alignment.
