2000 Cadillac Catera Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the safety precautions and steps for replacing the ABS Control Module on 2000 Cadillac Catera?
A: For safety reasons the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) should not be repaired; the total unit will need to be replaced. Except the ebcm/ebtcm, not a single screw may be loosened since this will ensure that the brake circuits cannot be leak-tight and in this way people can be injured. Start by placing the ignition switch to off position, remove the power steering fluid reservoir bolt, and set the power steering fluid reservoir to one side. Take off the upper Radiator Hose from the engine and then lay it aside. Next, remove the cover from the relay center and remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) from the center of the relay and move the ecm harness off to one side. To prevent equipment damage, ensure that the ignition switch is off when attaching or removing the wiring harness from the ebcm. Stop water, brake fluid, or engine coolant from entering the ebcm/ebtcm connector socket to prevent damage. Pull out the lock tab from the ebtcm harness connector and remove it. Make a note of the positions of the brake pipes for the materials needed for installation, then remove the wheel cylinder brake pipes and master cylinder brake pipes from the bpmv , plug the brake pipes to avoid any loss of fluid and dirt entry. Unscrew the two nuts which hold the bpmv attached to the bpmv bracket, slide off the heat shield off the insulator stud and move the brake pipes to one side or another as necessary to free your bpmv from the bracket while avoiding any damage to the exterior of the vehicle due to brake fluid spilling out from your bpmv. Take off the bpmv and the ebtcm as an assembly from the bracket and if only changing the bpmv, remove the ebtcm. For installation, in case of replacing only the bpmv, install the ebtcm, install the bpmv and ebtcm as an assembly into the bpmv bracket by ensuring the bpmv is fully seated onto the lower insulator stud. Insert the heat shield onto the insulator stud and install 2 bpmv to bpmv bracket nuts and tighten to 12 nm (106 inch lbs. ). If a new bpmv is to be connected, the shipping plugs need to be taken off the valve openings. Check that the brake pipes have been properly connected to the bpmv, otherwise wheel lockup indicates itself through the vehicle's response to a scan tool or a manual antilock stop. Mount the master cylinder brake pipes in-front and wheel cylinder brake pipes on the bpmv, torquing all brake pipe fittings to 15 nm (111 ft. Lbs.). Connect the ebtcm harness connector and press down the lock tab . Install ecm into relay center and replace the relay cover. Replace the upper Radiator Hose back into the engine and the power steering fluid reservoir. Fill the brake hydraulic system, activate the ignition switch to the on position with the engine stopped, and run the a diagnostic system check - abs.
