2001 Cadillac Catera Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the ABS Control Module on 2001 Cadillac Catera?
A: The first step for ABS Control Module replacement requires switching the ignition switch to off followed by removal of the power steering fluid reservoir bolt. Set the power steering fluid reservoir to one side. After pulling the upper Radiator Hose from the engine position it on one side of the compartment. First detach the relay center cover then extract the Engine Control Module (ECM) while placing the ecm harness to the side. Making sure you switch off the ignition prevents equipment damage and prevents water along with brake fluid and engine coolant from entering the ABS Control Module/ebtcm connector while handling the ABS Control Module wiring harness. Unused the hook-shaped lock element on the ABS Control Module harness connector to separate it from the connection. Inspection of brake pipe routes follows before pipe disconnection operations where wheel cylinder pipes and master cylinder pipes are detached from the bpmv. The brake pipes require temporary plugging to stop fluid loss and deter contaminants from entering. To access the bpmv bracket remove the two nuts securing the device then slide off the heat shield from its insulator stud until the brake pipes create sufficient room to free the bpmv and ABS Control Module assembly from the bracket. Removing the ABS Control Module from the replacement process requires testing only the bpmv. When performing installation on the bpmv only replace the ABS Control Module initially followed by installation of the bpmv and ABS Control Module assembly to the bpmv bracket with correct positioning of the bpmv on its lower insulator stud. Place the heat shield onto the insulator stud before installing both bpmv to bpmv bracket nuts with 12 nm torque. The bpmv shipping plugs must be removed when installing a new version of the valve. The correct attachment of brake pipes to the brake pressure modulator valve is crucial to prevent wheel lockup as this problem can only be identified by using a scan tool or performing an antilock stop. Fasten the master cylinder brake pipes as well as wheel cylinder brake pipes onto the bpmv while securing all brake pipe fittings to 15 nm torque (11 ft. Lbs.). After connecting the ABS Control Module harness connector properly insert the locking tab. Place the ecm in the relay center then cover it followed by connecting the upper Radiator Hose to the engine and the power steering fluid reservoir. First fill and bleed the brake hydraulic system and afterward switch the ignition to on position with the engine stopped and execute the diagnostic system check - abs.
