2000 Chevrolet Astro Air Bag Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Sensor in the Front End on 2000 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Initiating a replacement of the sir front end discriminating sensor requires disabling the sir system and disconnecting the mass air flow (MAF) and intake air temperature (IAT) sensors harness connectors. Remove the air tube from the throttle body air intake cover by loosening its clamp before removing the bolts which release the upper radiator shroud. Start by removing the fan and clutch assembly before moving on to the lower radiator shroud. Begin by removing the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor from its cradle by unplugging its harness connector at the top of the cradle and subsequently removing the mounting bolts. The sensor mounting holes or fasteners show signs of damage when you should discard the bad rivet while installing a new rivet (GM P/N 15715058) or equivalent. The repair work requires replacing the damaged rivet with a new gm p/n 15699834 rivnut or equivalent. Install the sensor with screw gm p/n 11515664 or equivalent while tightening all fasteners to 6.5 n.m (58 lb in). Follow these steps to handle the sensor correctly during installation while maintaining a clean mounting surface and placing the sensor flat with arrow front-facing and tightening all fasteners to their specified torque value to prevent air bag deployment and personal injuries. Follow these steps for installation by placing the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor on top of the cradle then secure the mounting fasteners to 6.5 n.m (58 lb in) while connecting the sensor harness before reinstalling the lower radiator shroud with fan and clutch assembly along with upper radiator shroud and air box with maf sensor. Reconnect the sir system, then finish installation by hooking up the air tube to the throttle body air intake using a clamp followed by reattaching the maf sensor harness.
