2001 Chevrolet Astro Air Bag Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Sensor in the Front End on 2001 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Begin the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor replacement by disabling sir and disconnecting both mass air flow (MAF) and intake air temperature (IAT) sensors. Start by loosening the clamp followed by removing the air tube attached to the throttle body air intake cover. Proceed to detach the bolts and remove the upper radiator shroud. Start by taking out the fan and clutch assembly then the lower radiator shroud from the system. Use tweezers to disconnect the inflatable restraint front end discriminating sensor harness connector at the cradle top. Then use a socket set to remove the bolts to extract the sensor from its mount. For new sensor installation start by cleaning the mounting surface and place the sensor flat with its arrow facing forward while applying 6.5 n.m (58 lb in) torque to all fasteners. Damaged sensor mounting holes or fasteners require removal of improperly installed rivets which should be discarded before attaching the sensor with gm p/n 15715058 or equivalent. The second fastener repair requires removal of the incorrect rivet and expansion of lower radiator support holes to 9.0 mm (0.35 in) followed by rivnut (GM P/N 15699834) or equivalent installation before screw installation (GM P/N 11515664 or equivalent) with proper torque at 6.5 n.m (58 lb in). The next step is to join the front end discriminating sensor harness connector to the sensor and reinstall the lower radiator shroud followed by the fan and clutch assembly, upper radiator shroud, and air box with maf sensor installed on the upper radiator shroud. Reinstall the throttle body air intake cover with its clamp before you reconnect both maf and iat sensors harnesses and turn the sir system back on.
