2000 Chevrolet Astro Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Calipers on 2000 Chevrolet Astro?
A: The necessary tools to service and repair the brake caliper include the Piston seal installer (J26267). Begin by removing the caliper while draining all brake fluid off the system. Safety first means you should never insert your fingers in front of the Piston when using compressed air since this could result in severe injuries. Only apply the required air pressure to push the bore Piston when servicing due to high pressurization which puts blown-out pistons at risk. Cleanshop towels form pads inside the caliper before users remove the Piston from the bore and then extract the boot and Piston seal while watching for possible bore scratches. Clean all parts of the caliper body with denatured alcohol together with the bleeder valve and caliper bore and passages. Use dry and filtered compressed air to blow out brake fluid passages until all parts are completely dry before reinstallation. Check the Piston along with caliper for signs of corrosion and scoring and plating damage and pitting. The caliper bore requires crocus cloth to remove light bore corrosion so the technician should replace the caliper if boracic presence remains. Any detected defects require replacement of the Piston or caliper. Installation requires brake fluid lubrication of the new Piston seal and caliper bore and Piston before installing the Piston seal with precautions to avoid groove twisting. After installing the boot onto the Piston position the Piston inside the caliper bore. The Piston seal installer (J26267) provides the tools necessary to position the boot within the caliper housing bore. Secure the bleeder valve within the caliper body by applying torque at 13 nm (115 inch lbs.). Pump the brake pedal until firm then verify master cylinder brake fluid shows at the correct mark as a prerequisite to vehicle movement. Finally, install the caliper.
