2000 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2000 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Start the Oil Pan service work by taking off the front crossmember then draining engine oil through the drain plug before removing the Oil Filter from the pan. Detachment of automatic transmission cooler lines begins by removing the front and rear retaining clamp bolts followed by engine flywheel housing-to-Oil Pan bolts and engine flywheel housing closeout bolts. Begin pan oil service by disconnecting the engine oil level sensor electrical connector along with the engine oil temperature sensor electrical connector. Accessing the Oil Pan assembly requires no lower pan removal and the exclusive use of a new Oil Pan Gasket without rivets. To meet the replacement requirements simply use a new gasket with no rivets installed. Start by removing all Oil Pan bolts before removing the Oil Pan while taking precautions to avoid letting any foreign pieces enter the oil passages. Drilling out Oil Pan retaining rivets followed by gasket removal becomes necessary. Before installation apply gm p/n 12378190 or equivalent sealant as a 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead to the engine block surfaces which need to be clean. Installation requires the Oil Pan (lower) with its gasket and subsequent tightening of the lower Oil Pan bolts (1-15) to 12nm (106 Inch-lbs.) while following a crisscross pattern. First apply sealant to the rear cover gasket tabs before positioning the Oil Pan Gasket on the pan. Then install the engine block components starting with the Oil Pan and its gasket before tightening all bolts by hand. Set the Oil Pan into its proper position before securing the two lower flywheel housing bolts just finger-tight. Apply a moderate torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) to the Oil Pan-to-block bolts and Oil Pan-to-Oil Pan front cover bolts simultaneously. Next, tighten the Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) and the flywheel housing bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). After reconnecting the engine oil temperature sensor connector you must install the engine oil level sensor with a torque of 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Finish the installation by bolt down the automatic transmission cooler pipe front and rear retaining clamp and the Oil Filter and oil drain plug while tightening each component to its correct torque. After reinstalling the front crossmember workers must check for leaks while filling engine oil and transmission fluid and performing front suspension alignment. This procedure requires four essential tools: j 33432-a transverse leaf spring compressor along with j 42188 ball joint separator and j 41803 engine support fixture and j 28467-b universal engine support fixture.
